Keith Patterson Everyone has a story, and here is a Cliff Notes version of mine. I was born in Syracuse, NY, and then raised in Buffalo, NY, where I attended a Roman Catholic elementary school. I briefly attended Canisius High School, where the Jesuit brothers and priests deepened my understanding of things spiritual. I graduated from Coxsackie-Athens Central High School many years ago, then headed off to SUNY Potsdam. I hoped to become a music teacher, but God had other plans. I switched my academic major to Religious Studies with a concentration in elementary education and graduated in 1979. I received my Master of Divinity in 2008 with a concentration in Pastoral Theology from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. In 2009, I entered the ordination process in the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont because my home diocese, the Episcopal Diocese of Albany, an ultra-conservative one at that time, would not ordain me (that’s a story unto itself for another time). My sponsoring parish for ordination was St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington, VT. I was later assigned to St. James’ Episcopal Church in Arlington, VT, for the remainder of my ordination process. There, I learned about the church in Vermont and became a part of the diocese. I was ordained to the transitional diaconate in May 2013 at St. Peter’s and then assigned to St. Paul’s in Wells, VT, as their deacon. My ordination to the priesthood happened at St. James in January 2014, and I was assigned there as a non-stipendiary (a fancy word for ‘I wasn’t paid) priest. Later in 2014, God led me to the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, where I accepted a call to serve as the part-time Curate at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a large parish in Concord, New Hampshire. While there, I was responsible for a pastoral care team that ministered to many members of St. Paul’s living in the area's retirement communities and nursing homes. During my time in Concord, I completed the necessary hours for board certification as a chaplain at Havenwood Heritage Heights. In 2016, I accepted the call to serve as Rector of Two Saints in downtown Rochester. Coming to Rochester brought me closer to my childhood roots in Buffalo, NY. After nearly nine years, I recently retired as the Rector of the Episcopal Church of St. Luke & St. Simon Cyrene (Two Saints) on August 31, 2025. I learned a great deal and grew as a priest during my time with the good and faithful people at Two Saints. I strongly believe in serving outside of the church, too. I am finishing a three-year term on the Rochester City Police Accountability Board. Recently, I was asked to serve on the Rainbow Seniors ROC board of directors and on the board of Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministries. I keep my finger on the pulse of healthcare chaplaincy as a member of the Professional Consultation Committee of the Chaplaincy Services at Strong Memorial Hospital. I try to balance work life with fun things like travel, Weber’s mustard on hot dogs, Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, and other cartoon series from my youth, and gardening.
